Broadcast Journalist, Paul Odom Otchere has questioned the religious beliefs of the Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Speaking on Good Evening Ghana Programme on Metro TV hosted by him, Mr. Odom Otchere alleged that Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was captured in a photo at a chief palace in the Central Region pouring libation which is a belief and practice of the traditional religion. This, he opined, makes it unclear on Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s religious belonging hence, his demand for her to clarify her religious stance.
The veteran Journalist who was running commentary on two interviews granted to Citi TV and GhOne TV by Prof. Opoku-Agyemang asserted that it is important for Ghanaians to know the religion of the NDC’s running mate who could possibly become the vice president of Ghana and it was therefore his expectations that she would be questioned on the religious faith she subscribes in the two interviews she granted.
“One question that we were expecting would have come that didn’t appear in the interviews is the question on Religion. What is Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s religion? Curiously, during one of trips to the Central Region, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang was seen pouring libation and that is one of the practices of those our friends who are traditional worshippers. In Ghana though, some people combine Christianity and traditional worship one way or the other. So the question would have been ‘do you combine Christianity and traditional worship or are you a traditional worshipper?’ because we would like to know the religions of our leaders especially the presidential candidates and their running mates” he said.
Mr. Odom Otchere disclosed that he will assign a reporter to purposely ask the religious belonging of the NDC’s running mate as and when she avails herself for questioning by the media.
“Maybe next time that question should come. Whenever she calls a press conference, I will send a reporter to ask that question because we have to know what religion our potential vice president is,” he revealed.
On October 13, 2020, the Broadcast Journalist on his news analysis show displayed picture of a woman purported to be Prof. Opoku-Agyemang pouring liquid from a bottle that looks schnapps in the middle of men dressed in traditional attires. The picture, he alleged, was taken during the pouring of libation by Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang at the Emintsimadze Palace in Cape Coast.
“There it is. Prof. Opoku-Agyemang has a schnapp in her hand and delivering the libation herself. This was at Emintsimadze Palace Cape Coast. That is Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang in the beautiful Kaba and pouring libation; so I thought one question to her would have been what religion does she subscribe to?” he added as he showed a picture.
