Dr. Mahmudu Bawumia, Vice President of the republic of Ghana has said he is satisfied with how governments One Village One Dam initiative has been implemented in the Northern part of the country.
The initiative, according to him has positively impacted the lives of the people in the five regions of the north.
Though government has been heavily criticized over the implementation of the project, Dr. Bawumia stated that the challenges with the construction of the dams have been resolved.
“I am very satisfied,” he said in response to a question on whether he is satisfied with the quality of work done on the dams.
It will be recalled that the dams were largely condemned by some members of the beneficiary communities, chiefs, key individuals and the opposition National Democratic Congress over the size and quality of work done.
The grand swell of rejection of the dams compelled the Minister for Special Development Initiatives to embark on a trip to the north to assess the situation.
Speaking on Asempa Fm Wednesday, the Vice President explained that the initiative is part of the three prong strategy government has adopted to boost the agricultural sector in the north.
“We have a three prong strategy for agriculture in northern Ghana. First is the construction of the One Village One Dam, second is the rehabilitation of the Tono Irrigation Dam and the third is the construction of the Pwalugu multipurpose Dam,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia added that “so far we have constructed 435 dams and it is still work in progress. We are still delivering. Just as been captured on our tracker, we have delivered and delivering. So we will gradually provide a lot of communities with these dams as we move on,” he added.
