Former president, John Dramani Mahama has vowed to investigate and repossess all state properties and lands allegedly disposed off under the Akufo-Addo-led government if elected president again.
The former leader’s pronouncement comes on the back of public opposition against moves by the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) to sell 60 percent of its shares in 4 of its hotels to Rock City Hotel owned by Minister for Food and Agriculture, Bryan Acheampong.
The National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who raised the alarm bells about the transaction, has led a protest, demanding that the sale be halted.
Ablakwa has also accused Kwaw Worsemao Blay, son of former National Chairman of the governing NPP and now Board Chairman of GNPC of encroaching the beachfront of Labadi Beach Hotel, one of the assets of SSNIT penned down to be sold out to the Agric Minister
In 2022, contents of a will of the former CEO of the Forestry Commission and former General-Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie sparked wide public concern about the rampant grabbing of state lands and other assets by politically exposed persons.
This was after it emerged that he had willed portions of the Achimota Forest, a forest reserve, to his relatives.
In a social media post on June 20, 2024, Mr. Mahama accused the current administration of dishing out state lands and assets at unprecedented rate.
He has, therefore, assured of probing such disposals and reclaiming the assets for the state.
