The Overlord of Mamprugu Traditional Area, Nayiri Naa Bohugu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga has denied knowledge of any decision to give the paramount chief of the Talensi Traditional Area Tongraan Kugbilson Nalebgetang and the Talensi Traditional area a one month ultimatum to gazette the Namoulugu chief as contained in a letter with the Mamprugu Traditional Area’s letter head and also published by Daily Mail GH on January 3, 2021 with the headline ‘Nayiri orders Tongo-Rana to carry out his long-delayed request within one month’.
The Nayiri has urged the Tongraan to ignore the letter.
This was revealed when Tongraan and the Talensi Traditional council upon receipt of the said letter immediately sent a delegation led by the Akara (Tongraan’s chief of staff) to the Nayiri on Monday January 5, 2021 in Nalerigu to verbally respond and verify the authenticity of the content of the letter as a sign of respect to the Nayiri. According to the Talensi Traditional Council, the Nayiri will usually summon his son (Tongraan) to his sacred palace to deliberate on the way forward on sensitive matters such as this.
The Namoulugu chief was instructed by the Nayiri to render an unqualified apology and to plead for mercy to the Tongraan after undermining the skin and authority of the Tongraan. The Namoulugu sub-chief whose actual status is a Tindana by the Mamprugu classification, is currently on a legal tussle with Gbane chief, a divisional chief in the Talensi Traditional area over Gbani lands. The Traditional council notes that the Namoulugu chief cannot be gazetted on the grounds that while he is yet to be gazetted, there are litigations involving him within the traditional area.
The Tongraan and the Talensi Traditional council on the issue of the delay in gazetting the Namoulugu chief, are only abiding by the instructions of the Nayiri that the Namoulugu chief should physically and verbally render an unqualified apology to the Tongraan as well as pleading for mercy for undermining the authority of the Tongraan who is the president of the Talensi Traditional Council where the Namoulugu chief is expected to be a member after being gazetted. According to the Talensi Traditional Council, the letter which has been discovered to have been issued without the blessing of the Nayiri directing the Tongraan to gazette the Namoulugu chief in a period of one month came as a surprise.
