Media Personality, Gloria Akpene Nyarku-Acquah popularly known as MzGee has revealed the struggles she went through getting into the media space.
MzGee disclosed that her first one and half year working at Accra-based Hitz FM, a subsidiary of Multimedia Group Limited (MGL) was without pay.
She indicated that she had always had passion for the media job and was determined on getting into the media space although she had a well-paid job with a finance company after completing school.
While working with the finance company, she approached one of the managers of Accra-based Joy FM seeking an opportunity to work with the radio station. But the said manager indicated to her that there was no space at Joy FM at the time but recommended her to the then Programs Director of Hitz FM, Mark Okraku-Mantey.
She was subsequently offered an opportunity at Hitz FM as a freelancer and she had to quit her well-paid job with the finance company. She was, however, not paid for her services at Hitz FM for one and half year.
But with the support of her family and her boyfriend then, she soldiered on until she was later engaged as a permanent staff of the radio station and put on payroll.
“I was a banker before I joined Multimedia. I was working with Bonds Financial Services now Bond Savings and Loans. I worked there from 2012 to 2014. It was a well-paid job. I even bought my first car working there.
I left the banking job because I felt I didn’t belong to the financial sector. And I have had prophesies that show that financial services is not my destined job”.
She added, “What happened was that one of Joy FM’s managers came to buy a car from my colleague. So I approached him for an opportunity to work there and he told me there was no space at Joy FM but Okraku-Mantey has taken over the management of Hitz FM so he would let him listen to me present and see if he can fix me there. So that is how I started working at Hitz FM. My first one and half year working there, I wasn’t paid. I wasn’t even a staff of the station. So my father, my siblings and boyfriend at the time understood my passion for the media job and they supported me”.
