Vice-President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has pledged to reduce the size of government if he is elected president in the 2024 elections.
Speaking at a lecture at the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Dr. Bawumia indicated he will appoint not more than 50 ministers and deputy ministers if he is given the nod.
The size of government became a matter of concern after president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed over 120 ministers and deputy ministers.
Many had demanded a reduction in the number of appointees with some calling for a constitutional amendment to cap the number.
The government, however, justified its decision to run what was described as an elephant sized administration and only reduced it to about 80 in its second term.
The opposition National Democratic Congress and its flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, who fiercely criticized the government over its size, have pledged to run an administration with not more than 60 ministers and deputy ministers.
But speaking on his vision for Ghana if he is elected in the December polls, Dr. Mahamudu said he will not cross 50 in his appointment of ministers and their deputies if he gets to lead the next government.
“An efficient system of government will require even fewer ministers. I will have therefore no more than 50 ministers and Deputy ministers,” he stated.
