DR. WILLIAM GUDU - MEDICAL SUPERINTENDENT OF BONGO HOSPITAL

Medical Superintendent of the Bongo District hospital Dr. William Gudu has recounted his terrifying experience after contracting and subsequently recovering from the coronavirus disease.

In an interview on Dreamz fm’s State of Our Nation on Wednesday, the revered medical officer who is noted for his long service and dedication to health care delivery in the Bongo District revealed that he was terrified and kept praying for recovery when his test turned out positive after he attended to a patient who was later discovered to have been infected with the virus.

“I got infected and just recovered. My sample came on the 6th. I was in quarantine and those times that you called me and I said I wasn’t around, I was locked up,” he told host Albert Azongo.

While lamenting a lack of sufficient support to health workers who contract the disease in their line of duty, he further narrated that “I gave my night watchmen leave, I asked my day watchman to stay away from me. Luckily I was able to buy enough food stuff and I was in there in my house. Day in day out I was praying until I overcame it. This is what we are going through”.

Dr. Gudu expressed concerns over a growing apathy among health workers due to the country’s current COVID-19 situation and the high rate of infection among health staff.

“Most of the people in my facility now are afraid. When you call them, they will tell you stories and most of those who tested positive are refusing to come back because they are afraid. If we don’t force extremely hard and bring this (pandemic) down, a time will come when you will not see any health worker in the facility. We have to prevent that,” he admonished.
