President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said he is not in a position to pass a verdict on the performance of Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu.
According to him, the New Patriotic Party government has done its part for the Office of the Special Prosecutor by establishing the office in fulfillment of a campaign promise and making available resources to enable it function.
Anti-corruption crusaders and a large section of Ghanaians have expressed their disappointments over the seeming lack of appreciable results from the SP since its establishment in fighting against corruption.
In an interview on Cape Coast based ATL fm monitored by dreamzfmonline.com, President Nana Addo said “We fulfilled a campaign promise that we will set it up. I put in there a man who is not a member of my party; very well known as a member of the opposition and a high ranking member of it. But a man I have come across in public life and felt had the capability to do the work. He is a man of integrity who was keen and interested in the fight so I put him there”, he said.
President Nana Addo stated that the office of Mr. Martin Amidu is an independent one adding that “We have done our best to find the necessary resources for his office to work well and he is working. I’m sure at some stage or another he is also going to give an account of his stewardship in that office. I do not want to be in a position to second guess what he is doing and also to be making comments like ‘I’m not happy about what this Special Prosecutor is doing’. Coming from the President, those kind of remarks have a different kind of impact”.
He touted the achievements of his government in the fight against corruption while emphasizing that anti-corruption institutions have been sufficiently resourced by government to carry out their mandate.
