THOMAS AKURUGU, CAMPAIGNING IN 2016

A former parliamentary candidate of the People’s National Convention(PNC) for the Bolgatanga Central constituency, Thomas Akurugu, has said the reason for his defection to the National Democratic Congress(NDC) is because he has admitted he cannot beat the NDC’s candidate in the constituency.

Mr. Akurugu who was the PNC’s candidate in the 2016 election announced his defection to the NDC with several other party members joining the defection.

According to him, he had to simply join the NDC because he cannot beat the party even if he decides to contest for the parliamentary seat.

“Aside from the NDC, there is no other political party in the region that could boast of beating me in the parliamentary race in Bolgatanga Central. So, I saw the need that if I cannot beat the NDC, I have to join them to rescue Ghanaians from the mess that the NPP government has caused every single one of us,” he explained.

Though Mr. Akurugu contested the 2016 elections on the ticket of the PNC, he revealed that he quickly grabbed a membership card of the NDC in 2017.

“In 2017, I had my membership card, but [I] thought it wise that I have to make it public so that my supporters will know that we are no longer members of the PNC. [And they] must vote to chase out the elephant,” he added.

Thomas Akurugu, a chartered accountant by profession entered the race in 2016 but lost to Isaac Adongo of the National Democratic Congress. He came third in then race.
