It has emerged that the 2016 parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the People’s National Convention(PNC) for the Bolgatanga Central Constituency, Thomas Akurugu, defected to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in 2017 months after he lost the parliamentary election.
Mr Thomas Akurugu announced his defection to the NDC only last week, claiming among others that he was joining the NDC to rescue Ghana but it has come to light that he actually became a member of the NDC in 2017, a time it was near impossible to do a proper comparison between the government of the New Patriotic Patriotic(NPP) led by President Nana Akufo-Addo and that of the NDC under former President John Mahama.
His defection to the NDC has been seen as significant given his rather stellar performance in the 2016 parliamentary election. Mr Akurugu, a Chartered Accountant with expertise in Finance and Grants, came third in the 2016 parliamentary election behind the NPP’s Rex Asanga, who was second. The seat was won by the NDC’s Isaac Adongo.
