Former President John Dramani Mahama has expressed worry about the possibility of many more acts of lynching that have not caught the attention of the public.

The former President joined calls for the arrest of persons who contributed to the killing of a 90 year old woman in Kafaba, a community in the Savannah region after she was accused of witchcraft.

Akua Dente was lynched upon a declaration by a spiritualist, accusing her of being responsible for the death of some persons in the community.

A video of the act which went viral on social media has attracted wide spread condemnation and heightened calls for action to be taken against the perpetrators.

“I’ve been unable to watch the whole video. Our society and institutions failed the poor 90 year old woman.

Where were our Assembly Members, Unit Committees, the Police and BNI when it mattered most? It was sad to see a crowd standing by and watching the gruesome spectacle. Very sad reflection on us as a people in the 21st century,” Mr Mahama posted on Facebook.

According to him, the discovery of the dastardly act was by chance, as many more might have occurred at the blind side of the Ghanaian public.

“Just by luck, someone captured the sorry sight on a smart phone. How many more Dente Akua’s have died pitiful unrecorded deaths? At least an example can be set with the perpetrators to prevent any such future macabre incidents,” he added.

Meanwhile, homicide experts from the National Police Headquarters have reportedly arrived in the community to help search for the murderers of Madam Akua Dente.
