President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has strongly expressed his disbelief at some comments made by former President John Dramani Mahama against a group of people he, the President comes from.

In an obviously outraged posture, President Nana Addo said comments made by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress on his social media page which includes calling a group of people ‘Sakawa’ is unacceptable especially coming from a former President to a group that the sitting President comes from.

An opinion piece authored by the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central constituency Isaac Adongo on the controversial Agyapa Royalties Agreement was shared on the Facebook page of former President John Dramani Mahama.

The write up described a group of known government officials and private individuals as ‘Akyem Mafia’ and fraudsters popularly known as Sakawa.

But reacting to the comment for the first time, President Nana Akufo-Addo said a “former President of the republic of Ghana can call a group of Ghanaians being sakawa people and it involves a group which the sitting president comes? And that statement goes without comments”?

The President who was speaking to leadership of the Catholic Bishops Conference at the Jubilee house expressed his disappointment at independent public figures in the country including the Bishops over their silence on the distasteful comments of the former President.

He asserted that calls for decent political discourse which are devoid of insults and name calling have fallen flat in the face of John Dramani Mahama’s social media post.

“The occasions are given where specific comments can be made, nothing happens and then it is lost in the generalities. We need to, focus on this matter in a living handed way,” he added.

The President further bemoaned the status quo where only governments get criticized by independent and influential voices, leaving out opposition elements.
