MARTIN AMIDU

Former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu has revealed that there are threats to destroy his property and murder him, adding that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should be held responsible if he is assassinated.

In an exclusive interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu of CitiNews, Mr Amidu, speaking for the first time after his resignation, disclosed that as a private citizen, no one can control him any longer and he shall assert his constitutional right to defend himself.

“Now, I am a private citizen and nobody can control me. And I have the constitutional right to defend myself as the Constitution of Ghana has by law established.

All these threats of murdering me and burning houses, I am aware…And the President will be responsible for anything that happens to me,” he alleged.

Mr Amidu also expressed readiness to lose his life in the fight against corruption, noting that Government’s supposed commitment to the corruption fight is mere rhetoric.

“Anyone who tries to fight corruption must be aware from the beginning that corruption will fight back. And from all that is going on, corruption is fighting back. And it’s demonstrating that the whole issue about fighting corruption is only rhetoric and the time of reckoning has come.

And nobody should push me because if I decide to respond, I will do so without fear or favour even to the extent of losing my life for speaking the truth and defending the Constitution of Ghana,” he emphasized.

Martin Amidu was appointed in January 2018 as Special Prosecutor to lead the Office of the Special Prosecutor(OSP). But last Monday, he resigned after what many believe was a poor showing. He alleged governmental interference in his work.
