Government has announced plans to construct what it termed as smart schools under the Ghana Smart Schools Project.
100 schools are expected to be constructed in selected towns and cities in each of the 16 regions under the project.
According to president Akufo-Addo, 30 of the projects will be completed this year while the rest of the 70 are expected to be completed in the next 2 years.
“Government intends to build 100 smart schools across the country. The first 30 of these will be completed this year and the remaining 70 expected to be completed in the next 2 years,” he stated.
“It is planned that the 100 smart schools will be located in the following cities and towns in all 16 regions; Eastern Region – Koforidua, Akropong, Kyebi and Abetifi. Greater Accra – Achimota, Agiriganor, Amasaman and Madina, North East Region – Nalerigu, Upper East Region, Bolgatana and Binduri. Upper West Region – Wa, Northern Region – Karaga, Tamale and Yendi. Savannah Region – Damongo”.
The projects when completed will be fixed with solar panels to provide power for usage and digitalized infrastructure to enhance teaching and learning.
President Akufo-Addo explained that the smart schools will not only provide conductive atmosphere for teaching and learning but also depict the country’s resolve for transformative and futuristic education.
The other component of the Ghana Smart Schools Project will see the distribution of 1.3 million tablets to students in second cycle institutions.
This together with the provision of modernized infrastructure, the president said, forms part of government’s resolve of leveraging technological advancement to improve the Free Senior High School policy.
He said the project is envisioned to deepen the application of IT in teaching and learning at the second cycle level.
