The Government of Ghana has indicated a plan to re-engineer the famed District Road Improvement Program (DRIP). According to President John Dramani Mahama, his administration would re-engineer the project.
Apart from the government’s desire to re-engineer the project, its name has equally been changed to Regional Emergency Mobile Maintenance Unit (REMMU).
By doing this, Mr. Mahama believes the equipment would be utilized judiciously to help in addressing the poor road network in rural areas.
To this end, National and Regional Coordinators of the Regional Emergency Mobile Maintenance Unit are being appointed by the administration.
As part of the District Road Improvement Program, the Upper East Region in August 2024 received 117 pieces of equipment made of 9 categories including wheel loaders, tipper trucks, rollers, and bulldozers amongst others as part of deployment of over 2,240 equipment across the country.
Before the elections, some of the equipment was utilized to carve out new road projects and to maintain the existing ones.
Speaking during his Thank you Tour of the region, President Mahama disclosed that the District Road Improvement Program (DRIP) would now be known as Regional Emergency Mobile Maintenance Unit.
This he hopes will lead to the realignment of the project to make it more efficient.
“We are also re-engineering the District Road Improvement Program popularly called DRIP that was introduced in the latter part of the outgone administration and this is going to be reorganized into a more effective, Regional Emergency Mobile Maintenance Unit to address the poor quality of roads especially in our rural areas.” The President said.
