Ghanaians along the banks of the White Volta River are being urged to take precautionary measures to prevent disaster as Burkinabe authorities announced plans to begin spillage of the Bagre Dam by Monday, August 19, 2024.

The annual spillage of the dam often  cause the White Volta to overflow its banks, resulting in floods that usually wretch havoc in districts in Upper East, North East and Northern Regions.

The planned Multi-purpose Dam was meant to curb the floods and the consequent destruction.

However, the dam has yet to be constructed, leaving people in these regions at the mercy of the imminent floods.

A letter dated August 16 and signed by Jesses Kazapoe, White Volta Basin Director of the Water Resources Commission, announced that the Burkinabe utility company, SONAL has communicated its intention to spill the water from the dam which has risen above normal level.

The letter indicates that the spillage will begin by Monday and therefore, advised residents in areas along the White Volta to take precautions to avoid being adversely affected should there be floods.

“SONABEL will commence the spillage of water from the Bagre Dam by Monday August 19, 2024,” it stated.

“Residents along the banks of the White Volta River are to accordingly be advised to take precautionary measures to avoid being adversely affected.”

It added, “This is to inform you for your further action relating to flood management. We will furnish you with additional information on this matter as this becomes available to us”.
