The Ghana Tourism Authority in the Upper East Region has held its 2024 awards night to recognize the diverse role various industry players have played in ensuring the development of the sector.
The event, which was held under the theme; “Celebrating innovation and recognizing excellence in Ghana’s Tourism Sector, saw various individuals and facilities receive recognition for their contributions to the sector’s growth.
Tourism Personality of the Year went to Sabinus Chiravira, who spearheaded the hosting of an event as part of the Beyond the Return Initiative in the region. Tourism Investor of the Year went to Dr. Sumaila Asaa Mohammad, the Chief Executive Officer of Rock Gardens Eco Resort.
Dr. Asaa Mohammad’s investment in the Tourism sector has led to a significant shift from the ordinary operations of hotels and guest houses to the conservation of nature and making the Rock Gardens an Eco-friendly facility and a desired destination for tourists.
At the awards, La Palm Zorkor Hotel emerged as the newcomer of the year, Tourism Collaborator of the Year went to the Kassena Nankana West District, and Support of the Year was received by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority.
Moses Apiah of A1 Radio won Media Personality of the Year while A1 Radio won the Media House of the Year. Digital Media of the Year went to Ghana News Agency.
Other categories saw V3 Travel and Tour receive Tour Operator of the Year, Visitor Attraction of the Year went to SWOPA, Grade 2 Restaurant of the Year went to Filmy Catering Services while Conem Catering Services took Restaurant Grade 3.
Traditional Caterer of the Year went to McLean Catering Services, Plus 2 Pup won Drinking Spot of the Year, Most Consistent Payment of Tourism Levy went to Exetee Hotel, Budget Hotel was won by Johnass Lodge, Zebila, and Guest House of the Year went to Rock Gardens Eco Resort.
1-star Hotel of the Year went to Golden Horse Hotel, 2-Star Hotel award category was won by Ganass Hotel whiles 4-Star Hotel was won by Akayet Hotel.
Speaking at the awards night, the Upper East Regional Director, Wisdom Ahadzi, noted that the theme for this year’s event reflects the dynamic nature of the sector adding, innovation has the power of providing unique experiences that will attract visitors.
He urged actors in the sector to thrive for excellence.
“The theme reflects the dynamic nature of our industry as we navigate a rapidly changing world, we must embrace new ideas, adopt cutting-edge technology, and foster sustainable practices. Innovation has the power to elevate our tourism by providing unique experiences that captivate the hearts and minds of travelers. From ecotourism initiatives that protect our natural heritage, and culture to digital advancement that enhances customer engagement, the possibilities are endless. However, innovation alone is not enough; excellence must be our guiding principle,” he encouragaed.
Chairman of the Hoteliers Association, Louis Tindan, called for the standardization of hotels since that is key to the development of the sector.
“The Upper East Region with its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking natural beauty has immense potential to attract tourists. However, to tap into this potential, we must ensure our hospitality industry meets international standards. Standardization is crucial to provide an enjoyable experience for visitors,” h noted.
The Upper East Regional Minister, Dr. Hafiz Bin-Salih stated that the region is a treasure trove of culture, history, and natural beauty as he applauded awardees for their diverse roles.
