The senior national team, the Black Stars have failed to make it to the Knockout stage of the 2021 Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroun after suffering a 3-2 defeat to Comoros Islands.
The Black Stars needed to beat the Comorians to stand a chance of progressing to the next stage of the tournament. The Comorian team, however, defeated them, sending them out of the competition and dashing their hopes of lifting the trophy for the 5th time.
The last time the Ghanaian team won the tournament was in 1982 and have since that win struggled without success to clinch another victory.
Prior to the commencement of the ongoing AFCON, president of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo charged the team to end the country’s 40-year AFCON trophy drought.
But the team have failed to live up to expectations as they failed win any of the 3 matches they played in the group stages.
They were beaten by Morocco in their first match and drew goalless with Gabon in the second game. Even after their seemingly poor show, football supporters in the country were still hopeful that they will progress to the next stage of the tournament.
But that was not to be as they have been defeated by Comoros in their last match in the group stages.
