Former President and flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Mahama, has condemned the activities of separatists groups in the Volta Region, stressing that Ghana is a sovereign republic and no one can claim a part of it.
He wondered what would become of the country if other persons sought to secede from it, reiterating calls for the matter to be dealt with decisively by the security agencies.
The former President who is on a campaign tour of the Bono Region, made the point when he met with the Chiefs and people of Jinijini.
Some persons had called on the former President to comment on the matter given his influence and his quest for office.
“Just a few days ago some unknown persons came to block roads claiming that Volta region is theirs so they want their independence. Ghana’s land belongs to Ghana. Ghana is a sovereign republic and nobody can claim a part of Ghana. When Rawlings built Ghana, we were all part. All of us come together to make Ghana so we cannot sit aloof and watch some people take Ghana. If it’s so, then everyone will trace their history and come for a part of their share which will not be a good thing. What brings us together is the fact that we are all Ghanaians,” he said.
On Friday, 25th September, 2020, secessionists belonging to the Western Togoland Restoration Front went on the rampage in the Volta Region, attacking police stations, seizing police vehicles and arms, blocking major roads and eventually exchanging gunfire with security personnel.
Today, they again allegedly attacked the STC Bus Terminal, beat up drivers and burnt one of the buses.
Activities of the secessionists in the Volta Region have left Ghanaians worried that the attacks could get worse and lead the country down the paths of countries battling formidable secessionists groups.
