Former Minister for Interior and Member of Parliament for Navrongo Central Mark Owen Woyongo is reported dead at age 76.
The former Minister died in the late hours of Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in Accra after battling ill health for some time, the Ghana News Agency reports.
Mark Woyongo was a key member of the Mills and Mahama governments that spanned 2009 to 2017.
He was initially appointed a member of the Mills government in 2009 as Upper East Regional Minister.
In 2012, he made a second at the Navrongo Central seat after his first unsuccessful attempt in the 2008 Elections and won.
He was in 2013 appointed Minister for Defence in the Mahama government following the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) victory in the 2012 Elections.
Later in 2014, he was reshuffled to the Interior Ministry as head following a shakeup in the government.
He sought re-election in the 2016 Elections but lost to his long-time contender Joseph Kofi Adda.
Following his defeat, he announced his retirement from active politics.
The former Minister not too long ago buried his son who died in September 2023.
