A Former Member of Parliament for the Bolgatanga Constituency, David Apasera has been elected flagbearer of the Peoples National Convention.
Mr Apasera was elected at the party’s national congress held on Wednesday across all regions in the country. New national executives were also elected to manage the affairs of the party for the next four years.
The former MP beat Samuel Adjei-Debrah and Samson Asaki Awingobit in the fiercely contested race.
He won with 1315 votes as against Samson Awingobit who got 789 votes and Rev Samuel Agyei Debrah’s 465.
Meanwhile for the national chairmanship position, Bernard Mornah who has been the party’s national chairman lost his re-election bid narrowly to Moses Dani Baah with total votes of 1266 and 1297 respectively.
Janet Asana Nabla was elected General Secretary with 1312 votes as against her contenders Emmanuel Wilson Jnr who got 1041 while Kobe McDonald managed some 230 votes.
For the Vice Chairman slot, Henry Haruna Asante won with 1729 votes against that of Omar Ahmed Bekure’s 635, Eugene T.K. Bashiru’s 375 and Hajia Hajara Musah Ali’s 946 votes.
David Apasera who is now set to lead the PNC into the 2020 elections won the Bolgatanga Constituency seat,now divided into Bolgatanga Central and Bolgatanga East, in the 2000 elections.The National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had presented formidable candidates but Mr Apasera emerged victorious and then beat them again in 2004.
He lost in the 2008 and 2012 elections to the NDC’s Opam-Brown Akolbire. A true party man, he has been unrelenting in trying to revitalise the PNC and make it a formidable force in the country, serving as National Treasurer of the PNC and Chairman of PNC finance committee from 2008 to 2015.
Earlier this year, he courted controversy when as president of the Ghana Association of Former MPs, a forum for Former Members of Parliament, he demanded unpaid ex-gratia from government for his members. The payments were flagged by the Auditor General, who said the former MPs were undeserving of the payments.
David Apasera, born on 25th APRIL, 1962 served as PNC Regional Party Secretary for the Upper East Region from 1999-2000.
