Five persons have been arrested in connection with the killing of the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Ekow Kwansa Hayford. The Ghana Police Service has disclosed.
This comes a day after a one-week commemoration ceremony was held in memory of the murdered legislator.
In a post on social media announcing the arrest, the Ghana Police Service stated that the suspects were being taken through legal procedure. Details regarding the arrest, the police added, will provided in due time.
“Five persons have been arrested in connection with the murder of the Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Hon. Ekow Quansah Hayford. They are being taken through lawful Police procedures. Further updates will be given in due time,” a post on the police social media handles read.
Mr. Ekow Quansah Hayford, aged 50, was shot dead while returning from a campaign trip on the Mankessim-Abeadze Duadze road by alleged armed robbers at about 1 am on Friday, October 9, 2020.
According to eyewitnesses, the MP was shot by the assailants numbering about six after he allegedly made his identity known to them.
His driver was also wounded in the incident but is currently in a stable condition.
The police has since dispatched investigators from Homicide and Anti-armed Robbery units of the Criminal Investigation Department to conduct investigations into the matter.
An amount of 20,000 has also been announced by the police as reward for any individual with credible information that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.
On October 15, 2020, a one-week commemoration of his death was observed at Mankessim in the Central Region. His funeral is scheduled to take place from Friday, November 27 to Sunday, November 29, 2020.
The governing New Patriotic Party ( NPP) has also nominated the widow of the MP, Ophelia Hayford to replace her late spouse as the parliamentary candidate of the party in the Constituency.
