The Flagbearer and Founder of the All People’s Congress (APC), Hassan Ayariga has vowed to spend his first night after being elected as President in police custody in order to fight corruption in his government.
According to the APC presidential candidate, such a move would send a strong signal to his appointees that they would be made to face the law should they engage in acts of corruption and therefore deter them from indulging in the canker.
Mr. Hassan Ayariga believes this is the surest way of fighting the menace which the country has been struggling with for decades. He stated that his government would ensure the complete eradication of corruption in the country.
“Corruption under Hassan Ayariga will be easily defeated. The first thing I want to assure is when I become president, the first day I’m going to sleep in the cells. The first day I become president, that very night I will not sleep in my house. I’m going to go to the police station and ask them to open the door, I want to sleep there because that is going to send the signal that if the president himself can sleep in cells then whoever is corrupt, no favor, no fear, will sleep there,” he said.
Hassan Ayariga who was the sole contender in the APC’s presidential primaries was acclaimed on Monday, August 24, 2020 after he was unanimously endorsed at the party’s second National Delegates Conference.
Addressing party members after the acclamation, Mr. Ayariga outlined various measures he would employ to fight corruption. He said among others that he would ensure periodic checks of his appointees’ bank accounts as a way of curbing corruption.
