FAROUK ALIU MAHAMA, MP FOR YENDI CONSTITUENCY

Member of Parliament for Yendi and son of late former Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama appears unhappy with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and some of its members who, he claimed, benefited from his father’s benevolence but are sitting aloof while his father’s legacy is being destroyed by the party.

In a post which he termed the state of his father’s legacy, Farouk Aliu Mahama recounted how his father spent his time and resources campaigning for the NPP to come to power in 2001 but was never appreciated and loved in the party.

The former Vice President, however, continued fighting for the party until his death in 2012 which he indicated happened while he was on a campaign trail.

But after the death of his father, he claimed, the party has not only attempted discrediting his legacy but has undermined members of his family who stood for his legacy.

This, he said, is happening with some members of the party whom his father fought for until his death sitting unconcerned.

Chastising the said party’s members, Farouk Mahama reminded them of the fact they also have legacies which they will want to be protected after they die and thus, will be unhappy if the very people they sacrifice their lives for act indifferent while their legacies are discredited.

Though he did not mention the names of the said members of the party who are supposedly sitting aloof while his father’s legacy is being discredited, a section of the public believes he is referring to Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

This is because the Yendi MP in an interview to news portal, Ghanaweb, in December 2020 after his historic victory in the Yendi Constituency, indicated that his father died while campaigning for the party with Dr. Bawumia.

He stated that the former Vice President fought to ensure that Dr. Bawumia was nominated for the second time as the NPP’s vice presidential candidate and was taking him around the country to get him familiarized with the political terrain when he lost his live.

“My father did a very good job for the party and the country as a whole. He made sure Dr. Bawumia was chosen. He recommended Bawumia and took him around and was through that he died,” he stated.

It is on the back of this statement that some social media users claimed he was chastising the Vice President for not fighting for him to be considered for a ministerial appointment. The statement has since been deleted from his social media handles.

Some residents of the Yendi constituency have, for the past few days, been protesting against President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for allegedly snubbing him in the list of his deputy ministerial nominees. They accused the president of betraying them for supposedly failing to appoint their MP as a member of his government.

But Farouk Mahama, in a statement, called for calm stating the president is the final appointing authority hence, his decision should be respected.
