The family of former President Jerry John Rawlings has confirmed his death, saying that he died this morning after a short illness and requesting that the family be granted the privacy as it tries to come to terms with his demise.

The release signed by daughter of Rawlings, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, added that funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

“It is with deep sadness that the family of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd), informs the general public that the former President of the Republic, passed away on Thursday morning after a short illness.

The family requests privacy at this difficult moment.

Details of funeral arrangements will be announced in due course,” the release said.

Meanwhile the Government has declared seven days of national mourning following former President’s death. All flags are to fly at half mast.
