Management of Sandema Senior High School in the Upper East region have denied reports that a 23-year student was denied admission to the school because he is an ex-convict.
The plight of Abu Safianu was brought to the public domain by Crime Check Ghana which reported that though he obtained aggregate 16 in his Basic Education Certificate Examination, he was denied admission into Fumbisi, Awe and Sandema SHSs because he is an ex-convict.
However, Headmaster of Sandema Senior High School Robert Yel-Oni told dreamzfmonline.com that the said student did not come to the school seeking admission.
According to him, reports of Master Yahaya denied admission to the Sandema Senior High School came as a surprise because at no moment did, he report to the school to be admitted.
“In actual fact this has come as a surprise to us. This did not even happen. The said student was did not come to me seeking admission,” Mr Yel-Oni said.
He explained that the current admission system where students are placed by the computerized system makes it impossible for students not posted to the school to be admitted.
“So I find it strange that a student will be roaming from one school to the other seeking admission,” he added.
It has however emerged that Yahaya wrote the BECE in 2019, a reason he had to go through a process to be admitted unlike students who wrote in 2020.
“We have engaged the GES Director-General on the matter of Yahaya. The boy actually wrote the BECE in 2019 and obtained Aggregate 16 while in prison, and was only released in December 2020, so he could not have the opportunity of applying on the CSSPS. However, there is an agreement in principle with the GES to facilitate his admission through the re-entry route at Awe SHS, Navorongo,” a statement by Africa Education Watch said.
