The Upper East Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), William Obeng, has called on political parties to refrain from inciting chaos over alleged irregularities in the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.

Speaking on Dreamz FM’s Breakfast Today program, Mr. Obeng advised citizens with evidence of non-Ghanaians attempting to register to file a challenge form with the EC instead of resorting to violence.

His comments come in response to concerns raised by the Pusiga Constituency National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communication Bureau, which alleged that foreign nationals were being bused in by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate to participate in the registration process.

Mr. Obeng assured the public that the EC has systems in place to verify the eligibility of registrants and sanitize the process.

“We are not dealing with angels only; there may be individuals attempting to breach the rules, but we have measures to ensure only qualified citizens are added to the voter register,” he stated.

He emphasized that the EC is committed to a transparent and credible registration process, and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities or irregularities through the appropriate channels. By doing so, the EC can investigate and take necessary action to maintain the integrity of the electoral process, he said.

In a call for calm, Mr. Obeng urged political parties and citizens to trust the EC’s systems and processes, which are designed to prevent fraud and ensure a credible voter register for future elections.
