Voter Registration
Voter Registration

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) is considering the possibility of organizing a new voter registration exercise for persons who were unable to register due to the coronavirus restrictions and persons whose names are missing from the voters’ register.

The EC made the suggestion during today’s Inter-party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting. The New Patriotic Party appeared neutral to the suggestion.

But the National Democratic Congress (NDC) immediately kicked against the suggestion. Its representative at the meeting Kwame Osei Agyemang-Griffiths explained that the registered voters will not meet the legal requirements to enable them vote given that all voters must be registered at least 60 days before the elections.

The EC is currently exhibiting the voter’s register to enable voter crosscheck their details. It had planned to end the exhibition exercise on 25th September, but has had to extend it to 27th September following numerous complaints from voters who have been unable to find their names in the register.

The flagbearer of the NDC, at a press conference today, criticised the EC for the lapses and their apparent intransigence, stressing the NDC will not accept results from a flawed register.

The EC has however assured that it is working round the clock to fix the challenges with register.
