The Electoral Commission has extended the Ongoing Exhibition Exercise of the provisional voters register.
The exercise which was scheduled to end on Friday, September 25, 2020 will now end on Sunday, September 27, 2020.
A statement from the Commission dated September 23 said the extension is to serve the interest of stakeholders as well as ensure greater participation and inclusion.
The statement further said the extension is important in achieving a clean and credible register as it will afford more registered voters an opportunity to take part in the exercise.
“As part of efforts to serve the interest of its stakeholders and promote greater participation and inclusion, the Electoral Commission has extended the Voters Exhibition Exercise from Friday, September 25 to Sunday, September 27, 2020.
The Commission is of the view that this extension will allow even more stakeholders to check and verify their voter registration details. This is instrumental for the achievement of a clean and credible Voters Register,” it said.
The Commission therefore urged all prospective voters to take advantage of the extended exhibition period and verify their registration details either by visiting an exhibition centre or by sending their details to the EC’s SMS code provided for that purpose.
“The last day of the Exhibition Exercise will therefore be Sunday September 27, 2020. We encourage the public to take advantage of the extension by making time to verify their registration details. Voters may verify their registration details by visiting their Exhibition Centres or by sending their Voter ID numbers to the short code 1422,” it added
The exhibition exercise which commenced on September 18 has been fraught with many challenges. Concerns have been raised particularly by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) about the many anomalies with voters register.
Presidential candidate of the NDC, John Mahama has expressed his disappointment with many anomalies with the register describing the ongoing exhibition exercise as chaotic. Mr. Mahama cut short his 4-day tour of the Bono Region and has returned to Accra to deal with the challenges with the electoral process.
He and his party are set to make known to Ghanaians their concerns with the electoral process at a press conference today, September 24 at 1 PM.
The EC, however, dismissed the concerns stating that such challenges are expected to crop up in any voters registration exercise and thus the challenges are not peculiar to this year’s registration exercise.
Meanwhile, the Commission has assured the public that all the challenges identified will be duly rectified.
