A lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University, Awineyesema Abiire, has attributed the delay in naming the running mate of Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to the current crises in the power sector, widely known as dumsor.
According to him, the Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, is highly tipped to be named as the running mate and since he is mostly likely to be named, it will not be appropriate to name him at a time there are agitations over dumsor.
Doing so despite the energy crisis from the perspective of the lecturer will appear disrespectful, a major reason the official announcement is being delayed in order not to portray the party as one that is insensitive.
Among the many being paraded for the position of running mate, Mr. Abiire believes Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh is rightly placed to galvanize a lot of votes for the NPP.
“He has the national appeal but the singular thing, we will now be asking this small ministry you’re unable to solve it, how then can you manage the entire economic management of this country for which power of energy is just a subcomponent of the entire structure of the economy,” he stated.
“I’m suspecting that it might be as a result of that that they’ve still not able to name a running-mate. If you pick him today and we still have this dumsor thing, you’re unable to go out to campaign and people are not able to defend you well”.
However, in the wake of the Energy crisis, naming him, he said, will become a major difficulty hence the delay in announcing the Flagbearer as he questions the timing of the return of dumsor which heightened few months after the Vice President became the party’s Flagbearer and the talk about running mate equally heightened.
