A leading member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo has accused the National Security of being behind the attacks on two police stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region and the blockage of major entries into the Volta Region.

According to Edudzi Kudzo Tameklo of the NDC, the attacks on police stations in the Volta Region and the blockage of major entries into the region are actions by the current National Security architecture to justify the deployment of military personnel to some border towns across the country which the NDC alleged were part of plots by the government to prevent Voltarians and other non-Akans from participating in the exercise to compile a new voters register.

In a series of posts on Facebook, Mr. Edudzi Tameklo suggests that the attacks by the supposed members of the Western Togoland secessionist group are part of the ploy by the governing party to rig the 2020 General Elections.

The leading member of the opposition NDC in his first post on social media admonished Ghanaians not to be deceived by reports in the media that the attacks are being carried out by the secessionist group, Homeland Study Group Foundation.

“Don’t be fooled. This so called blocking of roads in the Volta is the work of the current national security architecture to justify the deployment of the military by Nana Addo and his hype men during the election to intimidate voters in the Volta and Oti regions. We are smarter than them,” he said in a post.

A group of armed men believed to be members of the Homeland Study Foundation, a secessionist group which has been clamouring for a break away from Ghana, reportedly attacked Aveyime and Mepe Police stations in the North Tongu District of the Volta Region.

The armed men, Reports say, forcibly took over both police stations simultaneously, overpowered the officers on duty breaking into the amoury and made away with all weapons in the amoury in the wee hours of Friday, September 25, 2020.

According to eye witnessed accounts, they stripped the police officers on duty naked and took away their weapons before breaking into the armouries of the police stations.

The group also hoisted a so-called Western Togoland flag at Mepe and drove away one of the vehicles at the Mepe Police Station.

An unidentified member who spoke to Accra based Joy FM said they have three police officers in their custody, two of whom are injured. He indicated their resolve to continue rebelling until the president of Ghana succumbs and declares them independent.

Latest reports, however, indicate that the security service have successfully cleared some of the roads blocked paving way for the free flow of traffic.

Homeland Study Group Foundation, a secessionist group openly demanded for independence from Ghana in May last year following years of advocacy. Over eighty members of the group were subsequently arrested and criminal charges preferred against them by the government of Ghana.

The government through the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in July, 2019 withdrew the charges slapped on members of the separatist group.

In March 2020, a supposed flag of the group was hoisted at the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, the regional representative of the government of Ghana.

The development raised concerns about the effectiveness of the security agencies in the region.

Early this month, another supposed signpost of the secessionist group was seen in Korley, a community in the Yilo Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region. The signpost had the inscription “Welcome to Western Togoland, Stay safe” embossed on it.
