Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has professed that a debate between President Akufo-Addo and John Dramani Mahama who are the leading candidates for the 2020 Elections will be interesting.
According to the Vice President, although he believes the debate could be interesting, it is unnecessary since the record of achievements of the two parties are available in the public domain for Ghanaians to make a determination on which of them has a superior record.
Dismissing the calls for debate between the president and the former president, Dr. Bawumia stated that the debate on the achievements of the governing party and the opposition party are being had by the electorates who will give their verdict on December 7 hence, the call for a debate between his boss and Mr. Mahama is needless.
“I don’t think it is necessary but it could be interesting. Any debate will be interesting but as it is now, let’s just leave it where it is,” he stated.
“The debate is being had in every Constituency and in every district. Everywhere you go, record verse record (are being debated). We are having it on the ground already. So he (Mr. Mahama) has his record and we have our records (out there). The people are debating it in the constituencies. Any constituency he goes, he should ask them what he has done for them and what Nana Addo has done for them, the people will decide which of the two (has done better),” he added.
The calls for a debate between the leading candidates ahead of the December General Elections has renewed following the United States of America’s presidential debate between the Democrat presidential nominee, Joe Biden and president Donald Trump which took place on Tuesday, September 29,2020.
Policy think-tank, IMANI Africa, which has written to the presidential candidates of the two leading parties requesting to organize a debate between them has revealed through its founding president, Franklin Cudjoe that president Akufo-Addo has turned down its debate proposal as a result there will be no debate between the leading candidates for the elections.
Mr. Mahama, flagbearer of the NDC in August called for a debate between himself and president Akufo-Addo on the performance of their respective governments especially on infrastructure.
