An Accra Circuit Court has sentenced actress, Rosemond Brown popularly known as Akuapem Poloo to 3 months imprisonment for publishing a nude picture of herself and her son on social media.
The actress was on Wednesday, April 14, 2021 pleaded guilty to charges of publication of obscene materials and domestic violence and was convicted on her own plea.
She was, however, remanded into lawful custody to undergo a pregnancy test as required by the law before her sentence.
Following her conviction, there have campaigns on social by celebrities for her to be freed or be given less harsh punishment. With the ‘#FreeAkuapemPoloo’, they argued that although the action of the actress is condemnable, she did not published those pictures with any negative intentions and considering the fact that she is a single mother, it will not be right for her to be given a custodial sentence as that could have negative impact on her son.
But the court on Friday, April 16, 2021, handed her 3-month jail term despite the public pleas for non-custodial sentence.
Akuapem Poloo, in 2019 on the birthday of her seven-year-old son, took a nude picture of herself and the son and posted it on social.
The post, however, generated public uproar with many calling on the law enforcement agencies to deal with her. Director of Child Rights International Ghana, Bright Appiah took up the matter and reported it to the police. She was subsequently arrested and arraigned for the law court for prosecution.
She, later, apologized for her action explaining that she did it with good intentions.
