The Municipal Chief Executive for Bawku in the Upper East Region, Hamza Amadu is of the firm belief that, development must reach the people of the Municipality despite the volatile security situation of the area.

Apart from the Municipality being adjudged the best among districts in the five Northern Regions of Ghana in 2021, there are several other developmental programs ongoing under his administration in Bawku.

Though some development partners including the Ghana Productive Safety Net Project (GPSNP) which has been working since 2018 with the aim of uplifting people living in abject poverty in the Northern Ghana, withdrew their interventions and services from the area in 2022 following the pockets of violence, Mr Amadu said he is able to work to bring them back to continue their projects.

The re-emergence of violent conflict has left scores of people in the once economically vibrant town and agricultural hub dead while many have sustained varying degrees of injury.

According to the MCE, the conflict has partly taken a toll on the development of the area but largely not left behind.

He said, “Whether is conflict of no conflict, development must continue in Bawku. Among districts in the 5 northern regions of Ghana in terms of development, I can tell you that we are not lagging behind even though we lost a lot.”

He added that, several developmental projects have taken place and others underway including the ongoing reconstruction of the Bawku old market, renovation of Dams to serve the farming communities among others.
