The Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has assured Ghanaians of the party and its presidential candidate’s commitment towards the fight against corruption.
Mr. Sammy Gyamfi said unlike president Akufo-Addo who shields corrupt officials in his government, the NDC’S flagbearer has a track record of prosecuting his own appointees and party’s members citing the prosecution of Abuga Pele and Mr. Assibit to buttress his argument. He therefore called on Ghanaians to vote out the NPP government.
“As President Mahama demonstrated between 2012-2016, when he ensured the prosecution of his own appointees and party members in the YEA scandal involving Abuga Pele and Assibit, the National Service Secretariat Pay roll fraud scandal among others, President Mahama will not be a clearing agent of corruption in the next NDC government,” he said.
Mr. Gyamfi stated that Ghana needs incorruptible and honest leaders like the NDC’S presidential candidate and his vice who have served diligently in all their public lives. He added that Mr. Mahama would not shield any of his appointees should he be given the nod again to lead the country.
Speaking at the 10th edition of the NDC’S weekly press briefing on Monday August 10, 2020, Mr. Gyamfi said the next NDC government would implement the “Operation Sting” crusade as was announced by their Flagbearer to fight corruption. He explained that the “Operation Sting” crusade would enable the detection and prosecution of acts of corruption by government officials as they would be required under the crusade to publish their assets.
He also accused the Akufo-Addo government of being complicit in the PDS debacle hence the government’s failure to prosecute all those involved in the deal.
Describing it as the biggest scam ever perpetrated in the history of the country, Mr. Gyamfi alleged that high ranking government officials including the vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia conspired and fraudulently awarded the deal to PDS which local shareholders did not have the technical and financial capacity to manage the assets of ECG. This he said has caused the nation huge financial loss of over US$1.8 billion.
While assuring Ghanaians of the retrieval of the money lost in the deal through the “Operation Sting” crusade, he said the next NDC government under Mr. Mahama would arrest and prosecute all those directly or indirectly involved in the botched deal.
“Ghanaians can be rest assured, that under the “Operation Sting” crusade, the next NDC/Mahama government shall ensure that all monies (over GHS1.5 billion) collected by PDS from electricity consumers are properly accounted for, and ensure the retrieval of any amounts misappropriated by the company, their promoters and accomplices for the State. Also, the next NDC/Mahama government shall ensure the arrest and criminal prosecution of all persons who directly or indirectly played a role in the stinking PDS scam and the several other corruption scandals we have witnessed under the Akufo-Addo government,” he assured.
