Council of State representative-elect for the Upper East Region Pe Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam III says he will push for the development of the region as part of his role on the advisory body.

Speaking to the press after he was declared winner of the Council of State membership election held in Bolgatanga yesterday, the Paramount Chief of the Chiana Traditional Area mentioned the construction of an airport, revival of defunct factories and the building of irrigational facilities in the region as development initiatives he will be pushing to realize.

He noted that building an airport in the region could potentially attract multimillion investment to the area and boost the economy there.

“Upper East Region is a very strategic place that if an airport is sited here, we are likely to attract travelers from Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger,” he stated.

As an agrarian region, the Chiana-Pio said it was necessary to build irrigational facilities to address agriculture production decline in the face of the climate change crisis.

He also promised to hold the President and his administration to their promise to remunerate assembly members as he believes improvement of their welfare will enable them effectively play their roles at the community level.

“Some of the things that I will be making sure that we look into how are best we can help the Assembly members to do their jobs properly”.

The Council of State members are elected by an electoral college. Two assembly members from each Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly form the electoral college in each region and have the mandate of electing a representative of their respective regions to the advisory body.

The Upper East Region’s electoral college had 30 voters, 2 from each of the 15 assemblies . At the end of polls, the Chiana-Pio polled 18 votes to beat emerge victorious over 6 other contestants.
