Some Ghanaian supporters of Chelsea, an English football club, have donated GH¢2,000 to help build a lecture theater of 1,920 capacity at the Bolgatanga Technical University.
The Bolgatanga Technical University Chelsea Supporters Union initially contributed GH¢1,000 during a fundraising event during the University’s 25th anniversary grand durbar.
But touched by the benevolence of fellow supporters of Chelsea, the Chief Executive Officer of Blue Sky Hotel in Bolgatanga, COP (rtd) Patrick Akolgo added GH¢1,000 to the initial donation, making up the sum of two thousand (GH¢2,000) cedis to aid in the construction of the lecture theater.
The facility’s construction has become necessary because the institution has not got proper lecture halls and offices for lecturers.
Aside from the challenge of inadequate lecture halls, lecturers and faculty heads have no offices, compelling some of them to operate in their cars.
This situation does not augur well for proper administrative culture and institutional memory.
The designed edifice would contain four halls with 160 capacity per lecture hall which can be configured into classes, four main auditoriums with 160 capacity per auditorium. It would also house the exams unit, which would have 15 offices, 45 offices for lecturers, a lecturers’ cafeteria as well as conference rooms and seminar spaces.
Speaking to Dreamz News after donating, Dr. Oswin Agandaa Anaba, a senior lecturer at the Bolgatanga Technical University and Chairman of the Chelsea supporters union in the university explained that the move is to demonstrate the team’s huge fan base in the university community.
He hopes that they can, in the future, make more donations to help in various social interventions.
“Why we donated some money to help in the building of this block is that we have the majority of supporters of football teams and we’re hoping that in future, we can donate more. So, we are very proud of Chelsea as a team.” He narrated.
On the performance of Chelsea in the major tournaments, Dr. Anaba said the club is still struggling and working through the ownership transition and would in the not-too-distant future bounce back to its winning ways.
He is confident that Chelsea will make the top four and participate in the UEFA Champions League next season.
“We’re in a transition and the leaders and players are yet to fully adapt to the change that we are seeing. In the Conference League, we are doing well and we set a record as the only club to have reached the quarter-finals of all major tournaments. We are making the top four and if everything goes well, we are making the top three.” Dr. Anaba expressed optimism.
Meanwhile, the Bolgatanga Technical University is appealing to individuals, philanthropists, and the government of Ghana to support the institution with funds to construct the edifice.
