The stage is set for the 2024 presidential elections as the two leading presidential nominees file their nominations today, Monday, September 9, 2024.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who is the governing New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) nominee, is expected to submit his nomination forms at the Electoral Commission’s headquarters in Accra this morning.
A statement issued by General-Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong said he will be accompanied by his running-mate Dr. Mathew Opoku-Prempeh and other bigwigs of the party including the National Chairman, General-Secretary and the National Campaign Chairman.
“After submitting his presidential nomination, the presidential candidate would address party sympathizers and the general public at the party’s national headquarters at 9:00 am,” the statement added.
For John Dramani Mahama, who is leader of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), the National Chairman of the NDC will file his papers on his behalf.
The former president, who is currently on a 4-day tour of the Bono Region, described his nomination filing as a pivotal step in he and his party’s campaign for change in the upcoming December 7 presidential and parliamentary elections.
“The submission of the forms by our National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, represents a pivotal step in our campaign for change on December 7. We are all in this together, working with Ghanaians to RESET Ghana’s economy and ‘Build the Ghana we want together’”.
This will be Mr. Mahama’s third attempt at the presidency after his victory in 2012.
He had ascended to the highest office of the land after the demise of president John Evans Atta-Mills, who was then the president.
Prof. Mills was just few months to end his first tenure in office and had already been nominated to seek re-election but died when the elections were just about 5 months away.
Mr. Mahama succeeded him to serve the remainder of his unexpired term and was, subsequently made the NDC presidential candidate.
He went ahead to beat current president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who was making his second attempt at the presidency.
He, however, lost to Nana Addo in the subsequent elections in 2016 and 2020 but is now staging a strong comeback.
This time around, he will be facing off with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who was then the running-mate in the elections Mr. Mahama won and was defeated.
