Following Dreamz FM’s reports of the destruction of Anafobiisi Primary A School by a windstorm and the resultant toll on education in the school, Maltaaba Community Bank, headquartered in Bongo, has intervened, donating 10 packs of aluminium roofing sheets to aid the school’s reconstruction.

The heavy windstorm, which hit many parts of the region on March 10, 2025, tore off roofs of the school’s classrooms, deepening its infrastructure crisis.

The disaster has left the school with just three classrooms to accommodate its eight different classes.

As a result, it has been  compelled to hold lessons under a baobab tree and a poorly constructed pavilion for some lower basic learners while upper basic learners are accommodated in a church building for academic activities, all of which are without learning materials.

The rest of the classes are having to share classrooms, with at least two classes sharing a room.

The harrowing circumstances under which the children learn are frustrating academic activities and discouraging attendance.

DESTROYED CLASSROOM BLOCK AT THE SCHOOL

According to Anamobiire Felicia Anii, headmistress of the school, absenteeism has been on the surge following the disaster.

She has since been on a campaign, appealing to government, organizations and individuals to support a reconstruction of the school.

Alagumgube, a development group operating in the Upper East Region, responded, donating teaching aids and learning materials including white boards, markers, exercise books and pencils as an interim measure.

The latest donation by Maltaaba Community Bank is a significant step towards reconstruction of the school.

Chief Executive Officer of the Bank Peter Azeko says the donation is in honour of the bank’s corporate social responsibilities.

“As a collaborator in education, we decided that we will give a little so we brought here 10 packs of roofing sheets to help. We can’t do it all but at least, it can push and that is why we came today to make the contribution,” Azeko states.

He decries the infrastructure crisis at the school but expresses hope that his outfit’s gesture will be valuable in repairing the damage.

“These children are our future. The teachers are here doing their best and it’s a challenge for them and everybody. So you’re somebody who is able, do not wait for government. Government can’t do it all. So if you can, bring in your widow’s mite,” he appeals.

Assembly Member of the Anafobiisi Electoral Area Hannah Asanyuure, expressing gratitude to the bank, says, “when this incident happened on 10th March, all of us were worried. We didn’t know when the school will be renovated so that the children can have a place to learn. So their intervention will help us a lot. 10 packs of roofing sheets is something we would have used about a year to acquire”.

The headmistress of the school also expresses appreciation for the donation, stating, “we want to thank them so much for their kind gesture. They have something that we were not expecting. So we are grateful and we pray that God will continue to bless them” .

She called for more support to reconstruct the school.
