Some traders in the Bolgatanga market have decried the rapid increment in the prices of goods especially over the last two months. The traders say the prices of items increase almost every three days; that is almost every Bolga market day, adding that the situation is having a toll on their businesses.
A grain seller explained to Dreamz News that a bag of maize which hitherto cost between GH¢220 and GH¢240, now cost GH¢280. A bowl of beans which cost GH¢15 previously now cost between GH¢20 and GH¢22.
A 50kg bag of sugar which was sold between GH¢250 and GH¢260 is now sold between GH¢300 and GH¢310. A gallon of 25litres of oil which was also sold between GH¢230 and GH¢240 is now sold at as high as GH¢300.
A bowl of gari which could previously be bought for GH¢12 or less is now being sold between GH¢15 and GH¢20 depending on the grade.
A caretaker at a clothing shop who spoke to Dreamz News shared similar sentiments as the traders. “Actually, we are just managing, day in day out, they increase the things and it’s affecting business, today like this you can go and buy a shirt for GH¢25 and the next time you go, it is GH¢27 or GH¢28, so the government should do something because it has affecting us”.
A soap seller was also of a similar view “I sell soap and other things but honestly the increment in the prices of the items is worrying, today I can buy a box of soap for GH¢70 and in the next three days the price changes to GH¢75 or more, which is making my capital to gradually reduce. I have children to fend for, how do I do that in this current state”.
While some attributed the rising cost of goods to the increment of fuel prices, others blamed the government of the day for the situation.
They pleaded with the government to intervene and help reduce the prices of goods so that they do not gradually fall out of business.
