The Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate of the Ghana Health Service in the Upper East Region has organized a training workshop on Event-Based Surveillance (EBS) for key stakeholders in a proactive move to strengthen public health security.

The workshop, held on Friday, December 13, 2024, in Bolgatanga, brought together health volunteers, pharmacists, and media personnel to enhance their capacity in detecting and reporting public health threats.

With funding support from the Global Fund, the Directorate aims to curb public health threats by gathering human, animal, and environmental health information at the community level.

This initiative is crucial in identifying early signs of public health threats, enabling prompt intervention and prevention of their escalation.

According to Adjei Effah Simon, the Municipal Disease Control Officer, “This training will help the Service detect early signs of public health threats before they escalate.” He emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in ensuring effective event-based surveillance.

The training workshop is part of a broader effort to strengthen the capacity of key informants, including 27 health volunteers from communities across the Municipality.

These informants are expected to report event-based surveillance data, including frequently reported sicknesses, purchased medications, and other health issues that may arise during community events.

By enhancing the skills and knowledge of these stakeholders, Mr Effah said, the Bolgatanga Municipal Directorate is taking a significant step towards improving public health outcomes in the region.

This initiative demonstrates the Directorate’s commitment to proactive public health management and its dedication to protecting the health and well-being of the communities.
