The 3rd Edition of the Energy Commission’s SHSs Renewable Challenge was held at the Francisca Yizura Assembly Hall at the Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School.
Eight SHSs thus Awe SHTS, Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS, Navrongo SHS, Bawku SHS, Bolgatanga SHS, Our Lady of Lourdes (OLL) Girls’ SHS, Gowrie SH/TS and Bongo SHS participated in the regional competition.
This year’s theme was dubbed *”Clean cooking & food processing using renewable energy technologies”*. The competition is aimed at getting alternative methods of using non-hazardous waste products in generating energy for clean cooking and food processing. Therefore, in this competition, students are tasked to design a practical project and present it for a panel to critique.
Some of the projects from the competing schools included; a design solar cooker, a design alcohol multiple stove for clean cooking, plasto-fuel (production of fuel from plastics), biodiesel production from Shea butter, using petrol and water to power a simple gas stove among others.
At the end of the competition, Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS emerged winners of the competition. Navrongo SHS and Bawku SHS followed closely at the second and third positions respectively while OLL Girls’ SHS, Bongo SHS, Bolgatanga SHS and Gowrie SH/TS came fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh respectively with Awe SH/TS 8th finishing last.
By this results, Bolgatanga Girls’ SHS will represent the Upper East Region at the Zonal level.
The prizes for participating schools were certificates, branded T-shirts, Notepads, Plaque and Mathematical Sets,
Schools that will excel after the 16 Regional Competition, will be zoned into two – Northern Zone and the Southern Zone to compete before the grand finale on 19th October, 2022.
