The Bolgatanga Girls’ Senior High School in the Upper East Region placed 4th in this year’s renewable energy challenge organized by the National Energy Commission.
The school won the regional-level competition in June 2022 and went on to represent the region. Out of six schools from six regions, the school placed fourth and was rewarded with the sum of 38, 000 cedis.
The 3rd edition of the National Renewable Energy Challenge was under the theme; “Clean cooking and food processing using renewable energy technologies” and is aimed at getting alternative methods of using non-hazardous waste products in generating energy for clean cooking and food processing.
Students were tasked to design a practical project and present it to a panel to pass judgment on the best project.
The project by the four students of Bolga Girls’ SHS focused on converting plastics into gas for cooking and has the prospect of being used as an alternative fuel for cars.
The Upper East Region and Ghana at large continue to battle filth largely due to the over-reliance on plastics and the indiscriminate dumping of waste. This partly contributes to floods often experienced in many parts of the country.
But the project when given the needed attention and eventually developed could be a game changer in Ghana and many parts of the world.
The students who participated in the challenge were given smartphones to help them research.
The school was represented in the challenge by Salifu Nasamatu, Osman Angaandi Juliet, Adiba Emmaculate Weyamu, and Jacqueline Awanzirigo Asulisa.
