The Minister of Education, Mathew Opoku Prempeh has encouraged Junior High School (JHS) students sitting for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) to be confident as they sit for their examination and avoid any attempt to engage in examination malpractices.
A statement signed by the Press Secretary to the Minister said the Education Minister is confident that the students have been adequately prepared for the examination following their return to school.
He is therefore hopeful of their success in the examination and urged them to eschew any form of examination malpractices.
“He(Education Minister) is confident that they have worked hard with the support of their teachers, especially following their recall to school after the outbreak of Covid-19 forced the closure of schools in March this year. Dr. Prempeh urges them to be confident and avoid the temptation of examination malpractices, and with God on their side, success shall be theirs,” the statement said.
While extending his good wishes to the candidates ahead of their examination, the minister reminded them of the free SHS policy implemented by the Nana Addo government which makes it possible for qualified students to gain admission into any public Senior High School regardless of their family’s financial capacity.
About 531,674 final students from basic schools across the country will be sitting for this year’s BECE conducted by the West African Examination Council (WAEC). The examination commences on Monday, September 14 and ends on Friday, September 18 following a revision of the examination date which is usually in June.
In his 10th address to update the nation on measures taken to tackle the Covid-19 pandemic, president Akufo-Addo announced the reopening of schools in June for all final year students to prepare towards their exit examination.
Final year students of Junior High Schools returned to school on June 29 following the announcement by the president. WAEC subsequently released a revised timetable for the 2020 BECE indicating the start of the examination from September 14 to September 18.
