The Upper East Regional Director of Communications of the governing New Patriotic Party, Peter Ayamga Ayinbisa, has revealed that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia will name his running mate before the end of June.
Already, the Vice President is 6 months behind the party’s constitutional timeline which demands that he must name his running mate 12 months to the conduct of the elections.
However, the Vice President following his election as Flagbearer in November 2023 requested the party to grant him more space to do extensive consultation and background checks before announcing his running mate.
Despite the delay in naming a particular candidate, some names have been flying as favourites for the position of running mate including Osei-Mensah-Bonsu, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, Joseph Osei Owusu and Apostle Opoku Onyinah.
Speaking Monday on the State of Our Nation, Mr. Ayinbisa noted that the speculations will all end before the end June.
He refutes the assertion that the delay will negatively affect the person’s ability to significantly influence the election in favour of the NPP.
“I can assure you that whoever will be named is already out there campaigning for the party. He is not going to be a completely new person. The person is likely going to be somebody within the frontiers of the party, somebody who’s been working tirelessly whose contributions are very significant in our party today,” he stated.
“So it’s not going to be a new person like the way Bawumia came. I suspect that the person the candidate is going to name is going to be a very popular person”.
On where the running mate is likely to come from, he says the person will come from the Ashanti Region.
He adds that the running mate is a male Christian and is presently serving in government.
