The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) wants Vice-President and flagbearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to declare his stance on the raging issue of LGBTQ .
The call on Dr. Bawumia to make known his position on the matter that has dominated public discourse for close to 3 years now has been renewed following the passage of a bill seeking to proscribe such activities.
The bill, Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, if assented by the president, will criminalize promotion, advocacy and act of LGBTQ and impose up to 6-year jail term against offenders.
Both president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former president John Dramani Mahama have both stated that their faiths are against such acts, with president Akufo-Addo vowing that same-sex marriage will not be legalized under his watch.
But the NDC wants every leader including the Vice-President to make their position clear on the matter.
Speaking in an interview on Breakfast Today on Dreamz FM, a member of the Upper East Regional Communications Team of the NDC Isaac Ayemvoa argued that Dr. Bawumia making his position known will assure Ghanaians of his readiness to protect the country’s cultural values should he be made president.
“I’m yet to hear the position of the Vice-President. I know his religion frowns seriously on this matter but I don’t know his personal position and even his position as a leader now. In fact, I’m yet to see or read about his position on this matter,” he stated.
“So we are as NDC, we are calling on the Vice-President to state a position because it spice up whatever is going on. If the Vice-President today states a position that ‘I abhor this, I’m urging my driver to assent to it now’.
It is going to be a booster. So before sun will set, the Vice-President should speak, stating his position clearly. He’s now leading the NPP, wanting to become president, what’s his position, should he become president?”
