Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso Boniface Gambila has touted Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s credentials for the Presidency.

According to him, Dr Bawumia has over the years distinguished himself and has made a huge contribution to the successes of the governing New Patriotic Party.

As the race for the Presidential slot of the New Patriotic Party begins to kick in, expectations for the Vice President to be elected Presidential candidate of the NPP for the 2024 elections are rife.

Dr Bawumia is expected to announce his bid when the party opens nominations. Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen is also expected to throw in his bid, a contest some election watchers have said will be keen between the two personalities.

Speaking on Dreamz Fm’s State of Our Nation, the one-time Upper East Regional Minister under the J. A. Kuffour administration and now Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina said Dr Bawumia is overly qualified and merits to be president of the republic.

Though he will not clearly state his support for the Veep, Boniface Gambila said he will declare his support or otherwise to the vice president if the party grants approval for campaigns ahead of the Presidential primaries.

“The man who stood in the dock in the 2012 election petition, exposed the electoral commission and the rigging machinery of the NDC, made the court to make recommendations for improving the electoral system. He is a well known economist to the World Bank and IMF. They pick him, take information from him before he became Vice President. He is over qualified [to be president]. That doesn’t mean we don’t have other people,” he said.

He stressed that the New Patriotic Party upholds internal democracy and hence would not compromise the process of internal contest.

On whether he will support the Presidential bid of Dr Bawumia, Mr Gambila said “When the time is due, you canĀ  ask me. When they [NPP] lift the ban you ask me again, Mark it down and I’ll tell you whether I support him or not”.
