The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says he has reasons to believe that President Akufo-Addo is complicit in incidence of violence recorded at a number of registration centres across the country during the recent voters registration exercise.
Mr. Asiedu Nketiah alleged that Ahafo Regional Deputy Minister is captured in a leaked tape instructing NPP vigilante groups to cause mayhem and commit murder where necessary during the exercise with the promise that they would be offered state protection and reward.
He again alleged that a former Banda constituency Organizer of the NPP who had threatened Voltarians and other non-indigence to refrain from partaking in the registration admitted before the Banda Traditional Council that he issued the threats on the orders of National and Regional leaders of the NPP.
According to the NDC General Secretary, these alleged revelations are indications that the president and his government are complicit in the acts of violence that characterized the registration exercise.
Addressing a press conference on the incidence of violence during the exercise, Mr. Asiedu Nketiah said his suspicion of the president’s complicity in the violence that led to the death of two people is heightened by incidents that occurred after the registration exercise.
Detailing the said incidents, He said the president, after the registration exercise, had embarked on what he described as a “campaign of misinformation” to allegedly conceal the crimes perpetrated by his party members and appointees. He said the president on the said campaign had denied knowledge of the unfortunate incidents that occurred during the exercise but resort to create a picture that the exercise was peaceful.
Mr. Asiedu Nketia further added that suspects who had been arrested for violating electoral laws were facilitated by the NPP to secure bails and their cases were adjourned indefinitely.
“Two incidents that have occurred recently, leading to my heightened suspicion that, whatever crimes that had been committed during the registration exercise country wide and in particular Banda, had happened with President Akufo Addo’s complicity,” he said.
The second is the president’s attempt to embark on a campaign of misinformation to cover up these misdeeds. His Excellency has made several statements to commend the peaceful nature of the registration exercise without mentioning a single act of violence during the exercise, including that perpetrated by his own appointees,” he stated.
The NDC at the press conference called on Ghanaians to demand justice for persons who were murdered during the exercise.
It also called the International Community to impress upon the government and state institutions, it alleged were mentioned in the supposed leaked tape to have been colluding with ruling party to rig the elections, to desist from their scheme of helping the NPP to capture power through violent and undemocratic means.
