Deputy Communications Director of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Upper East Region Andrew Atariwini claims president has paid much attention to the fight against corruption.

Speaking in an interview on State of Our Nation, Atariwini said the president abhors the canker and has committed a greater part of his stay in office to tackling it.

In that regard, he stated that the current administration has equipped the various anti-corruption agencies as well as the security in its bid to reduce rot in the country to a bare minimum.

“This is a president that has committed, I believe, the greater part of his office and attention to the fight against corruption. Because the point is that he is not corrupt himself, he despised it, he abhors corruption, he wants the best for this country and so he did everything (to fight it) and his first appointment was his opponent,” he stated.

Atariwini’s view is contrary to assertions by many and the country’s performance on the Global Corruption Perception Index (CPI) by Transparency International.

Ghana, since the Akufo-Addo administration assumed power, declined in its corruption perception ranking and has for sometime, remained stagnant.

There have also been instances where the president has been accused of overlooking alleged acts of corruption or exonerating suspects, who are members of his government, even before investigations.

The president and his administration have also been accused of supressing anti-graft agencies particularly the Office of Special Prosecutor from executing their mandate of curbing rot.

But Atariwini dismissed these allegations, adding that the prevailing high perception of corruption is due to the government’s commitment to upholding press freedom which has given citizens room to express their views.
