The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Upper East Region says videos of the Regional Minister offering monies to traditional drummers in line with the region’s cultural practices have been misrepresented to portray the minister as displaying opulence.
In a statement dated February 2, 2025, the party said “the misinterpretation of this cultural gesture is unfortunate and we urge the media to verify facts before disseminating misleading narratives”.
Donatus Akamugri Atanga, who was sworn-in by President John Dramani Mahama on January 30 following parliamentary approval, was welcomed into the region by party supporters and residents alike midst drumming and jubilation.
The NDC in the region said a welcome durbar, which was held at Pwalugu to usher Akamugri in, was culturally significant and unifying as it brought together residents of diverse backgrounds.
As part of the durbar and in accordance with customary practices, the regional minister was handed a wad of GH¢5 notes, totaling GH¢100 to offer to drummers as a token of appreciation for entertaining the gathering, it explained.
“Due to the harmattan winds, the notes briefly scattered, creating an unintended visual impression that has ben misrepresented as deliberate ‘cash spraying’”.
The party said it regrets any concern “this misrepresentation may have caused and reaffirm Hon. Akamugri’s commitment to responsible leadership and prudent governance”.
It added that the regional minister is widely known for “his humility and modesty”, arguing that “any suggestion of opulence or extravagant display is inconsistent with his character”.
The party further dismissed reports that the cash the minister supposedly flung into the air was US dollars, stating that “only Ghanaian cedi notes amounting GH¢100 were involved” and that the cash was handed to him by the party’s Regional vice-Chairman Issaka Haruna.
